Tips for creating a graphic design portfolio

We hope you've found some inspiration and fresh ideas within these portfolio site examples. Below are some tips on what to include as you're building a portfolio site of your own.

1. Include only your best work

A strong graphic design portfolio showcases your best and most impressive work. These should be the projects that you're proud of, that feature work with notable clients, and that have produced good results. They should also represent the kind of work you'll be able to create for potential clients and employers.

Rather than including everything that you've ever made, leave out anything that you're not proud of. And make sure to include beautifully-crafted images that show your work in the best possible light. A good rule of thumb is including anywhere from 10-20 pieces that can speak to your skills and unique approach to design.

2. Explain your work in writing, but keep it concise

It can be challenging to make sense of a design without understanding its context. Adding a brief written introduction or explaining certain parts of your design process can help visitors better appreciate your work. Some background details that you can provide are: the goals for your project, what part of it you worked on, any tools that you used, and anyone that you collaborated with. Keeping these explanations concise will make sure the attention stays mainly on your designs.

3. Create case studies

Consider expanding upon a few projects as case studies. Case studies provide an in-depth look at how you took a design project from start to finish. You can include any work-in-progress, such as sketches or other designs that you considered along the way.

You can also explain in writing how you reached certain design decisions, what challenges you encountered, and how you overcame these challenges. Finally, you can add any testimonials from clients or managers that describe what it was like to work with you on that project. Typically, 3-5 case studies is a good number to go with.

4. Add your resume and contact info

It's common for design portfolios to include the designer's resume, whether it's listed on the site or available as a PDF download. For agencies, this can be a list of clients they've worked with in the past. Here you can include any relevant work experiences, awards, exhibits, or membership in industry associations.

If a potential client or employer likes your work, they should have a clear way to contact you. This can be an email address, your social media profiles or a simple contact form on your site.

5. Let your personality shine through

Potential clients and employers want to see your work, but they also want to get a sense for who you are. Allow you personality shine through in your site, whether it's through the design of your portfolio or the words that you use to describe yourself and your work. Some designers will include personal projects or passion projects in their portfolios that help tell a story about who they are.
