Some of the best-known Christmas songs have been covered by a multifariousness of artists. We look at Michael English language'south archetype tune "Mary, Did You Know?" and rank 14 contenders. Who do Yous adopt?

"Mary, Did You Know?" Is a Controversial New Favorite

You don't have to be Christian or fifty-fifty religious to appreciate the raw emotion of this popular vocal's lyrics, merely it certainly helps. Awestruck that Mary gave birth to Christ, the narrator asks her a serial of eighteen questions near whether she realized at the fourth dimension the total magnitude of the miracle she was participating in:

Mary, did you know that your infant boy will someday walk on h2o?
Mary, did you know that your infant boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did yous know that your baby boy has come up to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will presently deliver y'all?

Almost of usa know that songwriters accept creative license with their lyrics. All the same, Biblical purists still object to the vocal'southward delineation of Mary as anything less than a fully knowledgeable party.

As a effect, naysayers accept disparaged this song as "biblically illiterate" and "the hymn that cancels Christmas."ane,2 Another critic called information technology "typically Protestant in sensibility . . . emphasizing Mary's ordinariness rather than her extraordinariness."3 Whoa! Throwing shade over a infant Jesus song? Rather than wade into that thorny thicket, I'll simply present you with the songs and let yous decide for yourself.

The 1991 melody was start released by American Christian creative person Michael English, and in the ensuing years, artists of multiple genres have stepped up to embrace it. With so many musicians recording "Mary, Did You Know?", mayhap you lot wonder, "Who sang information technology best?" If and so, then hither's your adventure to compare their efforts.

"Who Sang It Best?": Here's How It Works

With many artists singing the same Christmas tunes, the sleigh has become overloaded. Permit's rank them and cross some off the listing.

In the "Who Sang It Best?" series, nosotros outset with the original version of popular songs that take been covered multiple times. And then we nowadays a set of contenders, artists who have released cover versions in any genre. Some cover versions honor the original artist's style while others are reinterpretations.

Since the original song version is typically considered "the standard," we don't include information technology in our overall rankings. Instead, nosotros display it kickoff for comparison, with up to 14 contenders presented next in ranked order. Vote on your preferences:

  • Exercise you prefer the original vocal or a embrace version?
  • Which of the cover versions do you prefer?

"Mary, Did You Know?" past Michael English (1991)

Michael English's career in gospel music one time flew loftier as both a solo artist and a singer in two Christian groups, The Gaither Song Ring and Outset Call. The Southern gospel vocalizer released this original Christmas song as a part of his 1991 debut album, and it has since become a vacation classic.

Scandal, however, brought his career to a full stop in 1994. Ironically, this was only a week afterwards English had won iv Dove awards from the Gospel Music Association (GMA) and shortly after completing a successful bout for unwed mothers. The woman English had been having an extramarital thing with was significant with his child. Both were married to other people.

There was an image to consider, and then English publicly apologized and returned his Dove awards to the GMA in shame. He divorced and stayed out of the public eye for several years before successfully returning to gospel music several years later with the help of famous friends and boyfriend musicians.

Although the song itself is lovely, I found English'southward operation of this original Christmas song to be guarded. I wished that he had opened up his vocalization to sing the song "loud and proud." Additionally, the tune'south electronic vibe is retro 1990s and doesn't fit the mood conveyed by song's lyrics. There is plenty of room to improve on this modern Christmas archetype!

1. "Mary, Did You Know?" by Pentatonix (2014)

The real test of whether someone can sing is to strip away the instrumentals and let them sink or swim on the elementary merits of their vocals. Based on this 2014 cover version of "Mary, Did Yous Know?", Grammy Award-winning a capella group Pentatonix clearly deserves all the hype that surrounds them.

Pentatonix is a quintet formed in 2011, later on winning the third season of the NBC a cappella contest, The Sing Off. The group has since gained international prominence, peculiarly for covers of pop and Christmas songs. Pentatonix's music also represents a significant presence on YouTube with total views over 5 billion.

In their cover of "Mary, Did Yous Know?", the musical grouping uses the diversity of their commonage vocal ranges to emphasize that a small gathering (rather than 1 inquisitive narrator) is in awe of Mary and her role. Each of the five vocalists asks her their gotta-know questions. Having multiple curious narrators magnifies the sense of wonder in this cover version, particularly as contrasted to a unmarried querying narrator.

Pentatonix'due south volume in the Christmas tune ranges from a hushful, empathic whisper to soaring, harmonic celebration. This diverseness adds emotional depth. In add-on, especially pleasing are the instrumental-like song effects and the resplendent displays of vocal harmony. Birthday, Pentatonix'south impressive functioning of this new Christmas classic opens the song up to a more than general audience.

2. "Mary, Did Y'all Know?" past Peter Hollens (2016)

Unless y'all hang out on YouTube, you lot may not take heard the compelling vox of Peter Hollens, a classically trained American vocalist who has earned recognition on social media for his music covers of popular songs. Hollens has participated in NBC's The Sing Off, has released EPs of his music, and has made a guest appearance in a Broadway show. He also actively publishes an extensive library of creative a capella YouTube videos that is worth following.

Vocally, Peter Hollens' 2016 a capella cover of "Mary, Did You Know?" is extremely audio, only it is the unusual video that volition brand you practice a serious double accept. Every bit the vocal narrator, Hollens begins in hushed tones. And then he chimes in with background vocals.

Wait, what? Yes, the twist is that this rendition'south supporting vocals are all Peter Hollens' voice, a point that is not lost on the YouTube viewer who sees five Peter Hollens doppelgängers joining the original. The kickoff fourth dimension it happened, I thought he had a twin. The 2nd time it happened, I was like, "Wait just a minute! All these guys look eerily alike." You'll want to watch this mindbending creative experience more than than one time.

three. "Mary, Did You Know?" by Anthem Lights (2017)

I like the piano accompaniment and soft vocal harmonies offered past Christian boy ring Anthem Lights in this 2017 version of "Mary, Did You Know?" Their voices convey the song's rich emotional texture without ascent so much that the narrator is overwrought. It'southward as if the young men questioning Mary understand that at that place's a sleeping infant present.

The grouping was formed in 2011 and was previously known as Yellow Cavalier. They take released several EPs that accept performed solidly on the Christian song charts.

four. "Mary, Did You Know?" past Danny Gokey (2015)

Former American Idol contestant Danny Gokey delivers a slow, hostage treatment of "Mary, Did Y'all Know?" in this 2015 cover of the Christmas tune. Violins provide a beautiful complement to Gokey's vocals, and although much of the vocal enjoys hushed tones, there are notable crescendos that include a choir-backed commemoration of the Savior'southward birth.

Gokey'southward version establish success on the United states of america Christian music charts. A former church music director, he has returned to Christian and gospel music in his post-American Idol career following a period of recording country music.

5. "Mary, Did Y'all Know?" by Voctave (Featuring Mark Lowry) (2016)

Have the angels gathered themselves effectually Mary? In this 2016 encompass version of "Mary, Did You Know?", it sounds every bit if that is the case. Slowly and delicately, they pepper her with questions.

Mark Lowry, co-writer of the original song, leads this gorgeous, fully expressive cover of the Christmas favorite. Lowry is an American Christian singer-songwriter and comedian, and he is joined by the lyrical force of Voctave, an 11-member a capella grouping. Voctave's group members take professional person roots every bit Walt Disney World entertainers.

Lowry'southward lyrics for "Mary, Did You Know?" began in 1984 when he was requested to write a script for a church Christmas play. The result was a list of questions that he wished to inquire Mother Mary.

By 1991, Lowry found a collaborator to add together the musical score. Although he immune boyfriend Gaither Song Band vocalist Michael English to first record this song, Lowry has released his own version of it several times over the years. This 2016 version with Voctave is particularly noteworthy.

6. "Mary, Did You Know?" past Hashemite kingdom of jordan Smith (2016)

Within minutes of becoming available on the iTunes store, Jordan Smith's cover of this tune became a best-seller, knocking Adele's "Howdy" out of the summit spot. Hashemite kingdom of jordan Smith was the winner of season nine of The Voice.

Smith's rendition here receives bonus points because it'south in front of a live audition. With its soaring loftier notes, this impressive comprehend conveys an inquisitive, wonderstruck narrator nearly brought to his knees with emotion regarding Mary and the newborn Prince of Peace.

vii. "Mary, Did Yous Know?" by Mary J. Blige (2013)

It'southward refreshing to hear a female solo of this song, specially when it'south by someone as talented as Mary J. Blige, Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and actress treats listeners to a tender, soothing rendition of "Mary, Did Y'all Know?"

Her cover of the song features a narrator who empathizes deeply with the experience of Jesus' mother ("Oh, Mary, Mary, Mary"). Although Blige doesn't enunciate a couple of the lyrics, the full effect of her vocal effort is convincing, as she holds no emotion back.

8. "Mary, Did You Know?" by Kathy Mattea (1993)

Known for her traditional country sound, Mattea won a Grammy for Good News, the Christmas anthology that her encompass of "Mary, Did You Know?" appeared on. She was one of the first major artists to cover the Christian tune and bring it to a more mainstream audience.

In her 1993 country version of "Mary, Did You Know?", Kathy Mattea'south voice is not also sweet but instead filled with experience and feeling, simply as this song requires. The guitar instrumentals are not as effective equally some of the instrumental furnishings used in other songs, but especially if you appreciate traditional country music, you'll savour her version.

9. "Mary, Did Yous Know?" by Cee Lo Green (2012)

This cover of "Mary, Did You Know?" is a far weep from some of CeeLo Green's other artistic endeavors. CeeLo Green is a Grammy Honour-winning singer-songwriter, record producer, and former approximate on NBC'southward The Phonation.

In that location were points at which I struggled to hear his distinctive phonation above the instrumentals. (Project your powerful vocalisation, Cee Lo! The background music is taking middle stage!) In spite of this, the 2012 tune performed well on the R&B charts. It was also used for the closing credits in the 2014 major movie, Son of God.

x. "Mary, Did Yous Know?" by Clay Aiken (2004)

Click, click, click. I could have done without the distracting finger snapping in this otherwise tender, sincere cover version. American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken doesn't take many vocal risks here, but he delivers a solid functioning. One of the most successful Idol alumni, Aiken establish several years of moderate success in country music then seemed to slip from the airwaves.

This cover version appeared on his Merry Christmas with Love album, the best-selling Christmas album of 2004 and all-time-selling Christian album of 2005.

eleven. "Mary, Did Yous Know?" past Zara Larsson (2017)

Young Swedish singer Zara Larsson lends her vocal talent to this 2017 rendition. She recorded it for the soundtrack of The Star, a Christian computer-animated comedy film portraying the birth.

Larsson's youthful voice meshes perfectly with the innocent questions that the narrator asks Mary. Larsson adeptly leaps from soft tones to belting information technology out with equal ease, and her innocent sound can help quiet critics who contend that the narrator's questions are inappropriate. Larsson tin easily convince the listener that she is inquiring out of a sense of naiveté and fascination.

12. "Mary, Did You Know?" by Sanam (2014)

In that location aren't as well many Christmas songs nearly the nativity of the Holy Savior that feature electric guitar riffs and Eastern-influenced instrumentals. However, this cover "Mary, Did You Know?" by Sanam, hailed as India's Ane Direction, manages to practise precisely that.

xiii. "Mary, Did You Know?" by Rascal Flatts (2010)

Although I'k typically the first to line upwardly behind anything released by superstar country grouping Rascal Flatts, their cover of "Mary, Did You lot Know?" is an exception. I establish the vocals to be overly nasal and wished they had more consistently hit the high notes more than finer. For a better executed Christmas vocal by Rascal Flatts—a group that is a perennial audience favorite amid country music fans—instead endeavor "I'll Be Home for Christmas" (2009).

14. "Mary, Did You lot Know?" by Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd (1996)

Land musician Kenny Rogers is one of the acknowledged musical artists of all time. He is the winner of multiple Grammy and other prestigious awards, including a lifetime achievement accolade. Unfortunately, however, this rendition of "Mary, Did You lot Know?" is non his all-time piece of work. Sadly, Rogers' voice is flat and unlively, as if he's bored with the questions he'due south request Mary.

Thankfully, Wynonna significantly amps up the energy, emotional depth, and quality of the overall cover song with her richly textured vocals. (I'd honey to hear a solo version from Wynonna.) Unfortunately, with so many other remarkable covers of this song, you'd probably take to be a fan of either of these artists to choose this version over the many other superior alternatives available.

Flourish, I had a really hard time choosing. I dear Pentatonix and anything they do. I also enjoyed CeeLo'southward rendition, although I'm personally not a fan of his. Sanam'southward version is astonishing. However, I have to go with Dirt Aiken for the simple fact that his video told the story best. His is the only one that features Jesus and all the wonder he'southward brought this world. I thought it was very well washed, and Clay'southward voice sets the mood, despite the finger snapping.

By the way, "Mary, Did You Know?" and "The Niggling Drummer Boy" are my favorite Christmas songs.

Hi, Flourish,

I love the Pintatonix version. It tops the original in my view. I also like Clay's version, only I can hear a story better in the Pentatonix tale.

Great piece of work.

I'm distressing about what happened to Michael English, I estimate he didn't know. At that place's something ironic there that makes you scratch your head with a big "hmm."

Sincerely,

Tim

Although I don't frequently mind to a capella music, I'd say the better a capella versions probably could not take been improved with instrumentals. They were so good. I'll put on the Christmas music and you bring us all some cookies from your kitchen, CarbDiva. Perhaps we'll get Bill to dress as Santa.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on December 04, 2018:

Yves - I was surprised at how skillful their operation was. Fifty-fifty though they were ranked way downwards on the list, anybody was adept with this vocal. That isn't ever the instance! I had never heard of them and was glad to acquire near them while doing my inquiry. I was also surprised that people can get so riled up over a song not being so literally representative. To each his or her own! Cheers for weighing in. Hope you lot're jingle belling your style through the vacation happily and so far.

Yves on December 04, 2018:

Listened to all the choices and to my surprise and delight, I voted for Sanam. They did a great estimation of the song. I was rather transfixed, actually. Enjoyed the story behind this remarkable song, too. It's rather funny that some purists cannot enjoy the lyrics, but at to the lowest degree that doesn't end the rest of us from appreciating this "typically Protestant" vocal. Lol.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on Dec 04, 2018:

Chitangada - Everybody on this Christmas song did pretty well, and it was difficult to rank them. There are some bully covers to choose from. I hope you are having a lovely December to remember.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on December 04, 2018:

Shannon - I didn't discover Reba's version until it was likewise late. HP simply seems to be able to handle about xv videos from a page load standpoint and so I have to limit my number of contenders. I figured that it would not exist very fruitful to offering a name and comments on this type of ranking commodity without the accompanying video, so I limited the field to 15 total. I'll become check out what I missed with Reba.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on December 04, 2018:

My favorite Christmas vocal....Smith or Mattea....although I'll listen to anyone singing this stunningly beautiful vocal.

Thanks for sharing!

Shannon Henry from Texas on December 04, 2018:

Oh, proficient one! This is definitely a vocal that is not sung best by the original creative person. I'chiliad blown away by all the excellent alternatives y'all present! Although, I hold with your assessment of near of them and I was surprised to detect that I didn't care for the Rascal Flatts version (not just because it isn't the normal lead vocalist singing it). It is very nasally, you lot're right. The kickoff version of the song I personally e'er heard was Kathy Mattea, I think. Or peradventure Reba's. I actually similar Reba's version, too. I'd honey to hear Wynonna do a version past herself. She sounded cute singing it. Pentatonix is really not my favorite, though I practise like the different narrators in their version. I judge I'thou saying that I recollect this song is difficult to choose a best. I'll marking "other" in favor of Reba, though.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on December 04, 2018:

Information technology is nearly impossible to option the very best redition of this beautiful song. I thought Pentatonix sang it beautifull, just some others were equally as good. I concur with your comments about some of the artists or groups, such every bit non liking the snapping fingers. I love this song, which fabricated this a fun article to read and listen to.

FlourishAnyway (author) from U.s.a. on December 04, 2018:

John, Thanks for stopping by. There wasn't a bad one in the mix here, but variations of good. (It's not always the case with some Christmas songs.) I hope your holiday season is off to a great showtime. Merry Christmas!

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on December 03, 2018:

What a great collection of encompass versions you lot accept here, Flourish. The original pales in comparison to most. I chose Pentatonix every bit my favourite but it was then hard to choose the best. I likewise loved Zara Larsson's version besides as Voctave, Peter Hollens, Anthem Lights and Sanam.

Great song to compare versions of.
